Pocket Pets and the Cold
We often discuss pet care for dogs and cats, but many of us have smaller pets too. We affectionately refer to these friends as our “pocket pets”, and the winter can be hard on them too.
All birds, exotic and pocket pets have different living arrangements, but most require very specific conditions in which to thrive. Here are some tips to consider for your smaller friends while the weather is colder:
- Keep cages away from doors and windows in the winter. If smaller pets are kept in drafty areas they will become chilled and may stop eating and drinking.
- Provide a “hot rock” or a heat lamp if suggested from which they have the option of warming themselves.
- Ensure that you have a backup source of heat, should you lose power in the winter, and be prepared to relocate your pet towards it. You may even wish to consider a generator if your pets survival depends on electricity.
- If your thermostat cools in the evening while you sleep, you may wish to place a warm blanket over the cages of your smaller pets to help keep them warm.
- Consult your veterinarian.
When in doubt, the last point is arguably the most important. Literature on the care of our smaller friends can be hard to come by. Don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian if you have any questions regarding your pocket pet’s care.
